The features to plan before framing starts are the door size, insulation, electrical capacity and heat. Adding them after the walls are closed costs more. Here is what each one involves, with HomeGuide's national figures where it publishes them.
Every dollar figure on this page is a national figure published by HomeGuide (read October 2026), not a price from us. HomeGuide publishes no figure for New Jersey or Newark, so we do not claim one. On a real job, the price moves with access down a narrow driveway, any old garage to remove, footings deep enough for frost and the finish you pick.
What size garage door do I need for a truck?
A standard single garage door is often 8 or 9 feet wide and 7 feet tall, and a pickup or tall SUV usually needs an 8-foot-tall door and a deeper garage. A double door for two cars is commonly 16 feet wide. HomeGuide puts a single garage door at $700 to $2,700 installed and a double door at $1,000 to $3,500, with an opener at $300 to $900. Take a tape to your truck with the mirrors out and any rack or ladder on top, then add a margin.
Should I insulate my garage, and what R-value do I need?
Yes, insulate the garage if you will heat it, work in it or have rooms above or beside it. HomeGuide says homes in cold regions typically need thicker insulation with a higher R-value, which costs more. Your required R-value depends on whether the space is heated: a heated or living space must meet the energy code, which the building department checks. HomeGuide puts garage insulation at $0.50 to $3.00 per square foot, or $800 to $5,100 for the walls and ceiling of a two-car garage.
Is an insulated garage door worth it?
An insulated garage door is worth it in North Jersey if the garage is attached, heated or has a room above it. HomeGuide puts an insulated two-car door at $1,500 to $3,700 or more installed, compared with $800 to $1,800 for a non-insulated one. HomeGuide gives no price by R-value, so compare the R-value printed on each door's spec sheet.
How much does it cost to add an EV charger in a new garage?
A Level 2 EV charger with installation costs $1,200 to $3,000 by HomeGuide's EV charger page. In a new garage, the cheapest time to plan for it is before the walls close: size the panel or subpanel for the charger and run the circuit to the wall where the car will park. HomeGuide gives no separate figure for a charger in a garage versus outdoors.
How much power does a workshop garage need, and do I need a subpanel?
A workshop garage usually needs a subpanel, so tools, lights, heat and an EV charger each get their own circuits. HomeGuide puts a subpanel at $500 to $1,700 and running power to a garage at $10 to $25 per linear foot. The right amperage depends on your tools and the house service, and an electrician sizes it. New Jersey's electrical board requires an electrical contractor's license for this kind of work, and the job is permitted and inspected.
Can I heat and cool a garage with a mini split?
Yes, a ductless mini split heat pump can heat and cool a garage, and it is a common choice for an insulated workshop or a room over the garage. HomeGuide's garage conversion page puts a mini split at $2,500 to $6,000 for one zone. Garage heaters cost $400 to $2,000 installed. HomeGuide notes that a garage heater makes a garage more comfortable and usable in winter in a cold climate.
Should my garage have windows and a side door?
Most garages benefit from at least one window and a side door. A window brings daylight, and a side door lets you reach the garage without opening the big door in a snowstorm. HomeGuide lists windows at $450 to $1,500 and an exterior door at $300 to $1,000 for a two-car garage. On a lot line, the code can limit openings in walls close to the neighbor.
What should I plan for storage, a loft or a car lift?
Plan storage and lifts before framing, because they set the ceiling height and the roof design. A loft or attic storage needs floor joists or trusses built to carry it. HomeGuide says adding a second story or loft for storage raises an outbuilding budget by $10,000 to $30,000, and puts a car lift at $2,500 to $5,500. Before buying one, check the lift maker's ceiling height and the slab depth its anchor posts need.
